Hatch Match

Optional. In Hatch Match, record water type, life stage, and at least one visible cue. Then explicitly send the broad group here. No-match and insufficient-evidence states remain unknown.

A broad candidate should come from visible anatomy or behavior—such as tail filaments, a portable case, surface wings, or rock-crawling—not a calendar guess. Fish and learning goal Use the group you are actually targeting because habitat, presentation size, legal methods, and handling concerns differ. The planner still produces a starting test—not a species guarantee. This changes explanation depth and learning emphasis, not the fish’s behavior or your odds of catching one.
Trip context Choose the system you will really fish. Inventory options that do not support it are removed from the result. Use the broad water type; do not enter a private waterbody or exact location. “Test a hypothesis” is best when you can hold most variables constant. “Cover water” favors search presentations; “Learn” favors interpretable feedback. Choose the feature you can actually reach: rock, wood, vegetation, a depth break, open water, or a current seam. Choose the zone the presentation must occupy—not where you hope the fish are. Surface film, shallow, mid-depth, deep, and bottom require different control.
What the water is doing

Use direct observation or a dated official source. “Unknown” is useful information and will lower confidence.

Estimate how far you can see a lure or object under comparable light. Clarity informs contrast and vibration; it does not predict feeding.
Use a measured value and interpret it for the target species and local agency guidance. “Stressful” is a conservation stop until reviewed; the planner does not apply a universal temperature threshold.
Record what is present now. Bright light can change where cover and shade matter; low light can change visibility and safe travel needs.
Describe the effect on casting, line control, waves, and exit time. Official warnings and craft limits govern the safety decision.
For rivers, compare current discharge/stage with the gauge’s normal context when available. For lakes, use drift and wave-driven movement.
